Laptop Stand Criteria
S-tier laptop stands solve the core ergonomic problem — raising your screen to eye level — without wobble, slippage, or compromise. The best desk stands use aluminum or steel construction with rubber-padded contact points that grip without scratching, offer meaningful height adjustment (not just one fixed angle), and stay stable under typing load. Mobile/rolling stands at this tier add smooth-rolling lockable casters, gas-spring height adjustment, and enough surface area to function as a real workstation. Arm-mounted options earn S-tier by combining full articulation with solid weight capacity and a ventilated tray that doesn't trap heat.
Mid-tier products (B and C) typically get the basics right but cut corners somewhere that matters. Common compromises include plastic construction that flexes under load, limited height range that doesn't work for taller users, or adjustment mechanisms that loosen over time and require re-tightening. Rolling carts in this range often have wobbly bases or lightweight frames that shift when you type. Desk risers here may lack a keyboard tray or offer only a single fixed height, which limits their ergonomic value. These products work, but you'll notice the trade-offs daily.
D and F tier products fail at the fundamentals: stands that slide on smooth desks without adequate grip, frames that flex visibly when you rest your wrists, or rolling carts with casters that don't lock and drift mid-use. Tripod-style stands designed for projectors or DJ gear that happen to hold a laptop are not purpose-built for ergonomic laptop use and lack the stability and surface design that laptop work requires. Products with no meaningful height adjustment, or those that serve a completely different primary use case, belong here.
