Smart Plugs Criteria
The best smart plugs connect reliably without dropping off your network, support the protocols that future-proof your home, and stay out of the way once set up. Matter over Thread or Zigbee/Z-Wave plugs that double as mesh repeaters strengthen your whole network rather than just adding another Wi-Fi client, and the standouts add genuinely useful energy monitoring that reports accurate real-time wattage. Broad ecosystem support matters too — working across Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home means you aren't locked in if you switch platforms. A compact body that doesn't block the second outlet is the final mark of a thoughtful design.
Mid-tier plugs almost always work, but they cut corners somewhere. The most common compromise is Wi-Fi-only 2.4GHz operation with no Matter support, which means more network congestion and no path forward as standards shift. Many drop energy monitoring, omit Apple HomeKit, or rely on a generic Tuya/Smart Life app that feels clunky and bundles your data through unfamiliar servers. These get the job done for basic scheduling and voice control, but you're trusting a less-proven connection and giving up flexibility.
The bottom tier is where fundamentals break down. Plugs that drop connection frequently, require a proprietary hub you don't already own for basic on/off, or are simple RF remote-control outlets masquerading as "smart" devices belong here — RF remotes have no app, no scheduling from your phone, and no voice control. Discontinued ecosystems like Insteon and Wink, oversized bodies that block adjacent outlets, and no-name brands offering nothing the established players don't do better are all red flags. If a plug needs a hub for a job a standalone Wi-Fi plug handles, and you don't already run that hub, it's hard to justify.
